As this was an extension of the Kenya Houston Zoo trip, we had already attended a pre-trip briefing with James, so Jen was able to build from where he left off. Jen also did quick follow up with questions about tipping, baggage allowances, and VIP meet-n-greet services that really put us at ease about travelling so far for so long since we would be gone for 19 days.

We were so happy that Rwanda meet and greet helped us with Rwanda visa application upon arrival after we’d been delayed 2-days due to our cancelled Rwandair flight.
Our driver/guide for two days was Mitcho – who with his help and energy allowed us to cram-in everything on our 4-day itinerary in only 2-days! Mitcho got us into the Genocide Memorial, drove us up to Kinigi even with ~15min delay for highway shut down due to a truck accident. Mitcho was very helpful getting us assigned to a Gorilla Trek guide and group that was more active and willing to hike longer to see a Silverback group higher up the volcano. Mitcho was also able to do the same for us the next day with the G. Monkey Trek. We even had time to visit the Dian Fossey Museum as well as the Women’s culture and craft center near Volcanoes N. Pk. we thought we’d have to miss on our compressed itinerary. Mitcho was a really key part of us making up our lost days and able to still enjoy everything we had hoped to do and to see. We both wished we had more time at Virunga Spa & Inn since the garden grounds, food, and staff were so wonderful!

The food, the staff, even the folks that helped fit our hiking Gaters, and especially the staff that cleaned our hiking boots nightly after day long muddy hikes in the N. Park were very welcoming and much appreciated. The Rwandan coffee and the food – every meal was exceptionally prepared and presented in a timely fashion by asking us at each stage of our meals if we were ready for the next course. Such attention to detail and such quality of service is very much appreciated since we’d had such a rough trip getting there.
